Discover the Dordogne from your holiday home in Les Eyzies

Discover the Dordogne in 2020. Its green, secluded valleys, endowed with a rich tapestry of scenery, from narrow gorges to densely wooded hillsides to the serried ranks of gnarled grapevines. Through these landscapes flow the great rivers that define this region, the Vézère and the Dordogne. It’s an area that is best savoured at its own unhurried pace. There is always something to catch your eye or ignite the imagination. Some unforgotten corner to stumble upon. A market, or a brocante. Do not imagine, though, that the area is undiscovered, some of its sites are numbered as the most visited in France. But, its heartland is still steeped in what the French call the douceur de vivre, the gentle way of life.

The area surrounding “Les Girouteaux” is full of history and wonderful places to visit. Chateaux like Castelnaud, Beynac, Commarque and Milandes. Caves at Proumeyssac, Lascaux, Font de Gaume, Padirac and many more await your discovery. And the bastide towns and beau villages such as Limeuil, Sarlat, Domme, Belves, Monpazier, Perigueux, Rocamadour can’t be missed.

Restaurants serve fabulous dishes with ingredients that include Foie Gras, cepes and black Périgord truffles. There are lovely local markets where you can buy all the region’s local delicacies, fresh salads and vegetables. Plus locally made dishes, and farm-reared to take home and prepare in your cottage kitchen.

Of course, we must not forget the wine. The Bergerac area has some wonderful local wines and there are plenty of local producers who encourage you to visit their vineyards to sample and buy their wine at amazing prices. Visit the wine museum at Bergerac and follow the wine route through the Dordogne valley.
